Hummingbird Medicine 1

Summer and Hummingbirds!

June 22, 2010 – Today I called a wonderful woman named Lillian. I hadn’t talked to her in a very long time. She was married many years ago to a second cousin of mine. Lillian is a wonderfully positive person. She experiences a lot of joy in her life. She has a lot of love in her life. I called her to let her know that I am moving to her city in a few months.

Lillian encouraged me to enjoy life as much as possible, and leave the past behind.  She remarked to me that it isn’t too late to experience joy and happiness and contentment in my life. Her life changed 30 years ago, when she was a bit younger than I am now. She made a conscious decision and never looked back.

She is well aware of my mother’s “B female family curse” (surname abbreviated).  She agrees with my view that I am the bridge between generations in my family of origin. She mentioned that her daughters are not “B” women (their father is my mother’s first cousin), hence the reference to the “B” female family curse). I told Lillian that my daughter is not a “B” woman either.

Today is also the first day of sun in many weeks in my area. It’s been extremely stressful living without sun and blue skies. It’s been dark, cloudy, rainy and cold for over 45 days. Today, the second day of summer, we finally had glorious sunshine for a few hours. I was outside on my deck soon after talking with Lillian, pruning some roses.

Suddenly, a hummingbird flew right up in my face and flew away.  I knew that it was Hummingbird calling me to Joy. Thank you Hummingbird for the call, and the reminder!  May I live from that place and endeavor to be joy to myself and all I meet.

PBS recently rebroadcasted a wonderful special about hummingbirds.  If you can catch it in your area, or find it elsewhere, it is well worth watching!

It is said that Hummingbird brings love as no other medicine can. Follow Sister Hummingbird and you will experience a renewal of the magic of living.

Hummingbird is loved by the flowers and plants, for as it sucks the nectar from the flower, the plant reproduces and more of its kind are created. Its presence brings joy to the observer watching it. The Hummingbird is the only creature that can stop completely while traveling at full speed; can hover; or can go forward, backward, up or down.

Great Spirit created Hummingbird to be slightly different from other feathered creatures. Hummingbird lives on nectar and searches for the sweetness of life. Its purpose is to pollinate the flowers of the world. Its long beak allows it to bypass the often tough and bitter outer layer to find the hidden treasures underneath. The song of Hummingbird awakens the medicine flowers.

Hummingbird is also inner joy. A Hummingbird person takes great pleasure in spreading joy and love and beauty to all around them, and has the gift of taking that inner joy into new and different surroundings.

If Hummingbird is your personal medicine, you love life and its joys. Your presence brings joy to others. You have a talent for finding the good in people, and are not put off by a gruff or abrupt exterior for you know that, if you can only get beyond that tough outside layer, you’ll find goodness and beauty inside. You join people together in relationships which bring out the best in them.

You know instinctively where beauty abides and, near or far, you journey to that place. You move comfortably within a beautiful environment and help others taste the succulent nectar of life. Hummingbird disdains ugliness or harshness, and quickly flies away from discord or disharmony. Hummingbird is a fragile medicine, its target is Beauty and Hummingbird’s mission is to spread joy or be destroyed. Hummingbird quickly dies if caged, caught, or imprisoned.

You may have a gift for working with flowers, maybe growing them to share with others, or using flower essences for healing. Aroma therapy may be your calling.

After doing some research on the internet for the term “Hummingbird Medicine,” here is what I found:

  • Hummingbird medicine says to get ready for a strange new burst of energy which may leave your senses reeling.
  • Hummingbird medicine symbolizes a renewal of the magic of living, an opportunity to enjoy the Creator’s many gifts.
  • Hummingbird medicine brings love like no other medicine can.

In The Animal Wise Tarot, Ted Andrews adds:

“Hummingbird’s appearance signals a time of new nectar within our lives. New joy is manifesting around us and our dreams are closer to be fulfilled. We are entering a period of accomplishment.

Hummingbird’s appearance always heralds joy and accomplishment. We will begin to see the attainment of our dreams. Opportunity is manifesting around us and we should grab it heartily. Hummingbird signals a time of blessings and new sunshine. New ventures of success and renewed health are a promise.

The hummingbird is a symbol for accomplishing what seems impossible. The hummingbird helps us to find the miracle of joyful living. A beautiful, magical gift.”

All that I can say is “Wow! Thank you my hummingbird friends!”
